President Trump is visiting a new immigration facility in the Florida Everglades, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz.” The facility, located on a remote airstrip approximately 50 miles west of Miami, is designed to house and process up to 5,000 detainees.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has used emergency powers to fast-track the construction of this facility, which utilizes temporary structures like tents and trailers. Its annual operating cost is estimated at around $450 million. Proponents, including Governor DeSantis and Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, emphasize the site's extreme isolation and natural barriers, such as alligators and pythons, as key security features, making escape highly improbable. The Florida Republican Party is even selling merchandise related to “Alligator Alcatraz.”
However, the facility has drawn significant criticism from various organizations. Opponents condemn it as an inhumane makeshift prison that threatens the fragile Everglades ecosystem, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Environmental groups have filed a lawsuit to halt construction, arguing that the project has bypassed necessary environmental reviews. Native American leaders also oppose the development, citing the sacred nature of the land. Despite these protests and legal challenges, the administration is pushing forward, positioning “Alligator Alcatraz” as a symbol of its commitment to mass deportations.
