Trump Proposes Rebuilding and Reopening Alcatraz for Nation’s Most Dangerous Criminals

President Donald Trump has called for the reconstruction and reopening of Alcatraz, the historic island prison in San Francisco Bay, to house what he described as the nation’s most dangerous and repeat criminal offenders. In a Truth Social post, Trump stated that the new facility would symbolize law, order, and justice, and help address concerns about violent crime and illegal immigration.

Trump said he would direct multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Justice and Bureau of Prisons, to oversee the development of a larger, modern version of the prison. Alcatraz, which operated from 1934 to 1963, was known for its isolation and high-security conditions. It was eventually shut down due to high operational costs and infrastructure issues caused by its coastal location.

Supporters, including former ICE acting director Tom Homan, said the proposal could address the current shortage of detention space. Homan noted that reopening the facility might be suitable for detaining high-risk individuals who pose significant public safety or national security threats.

Alcatraz is now managed by the National Park Service and attracts over 1.5 million tourists annually. The feasibility, cost, and legislative approval required to implement Trump’s proposal remain unclear.
