“Trump Crackdown on Protests and Immigration has Led to Islamophobia, Muslim Group Says”

By Gonzalez Olivieri, on Immigration Updates

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) reported that Islamophobia in the United States reached a record high in 2025, with 8,683 anti-Muslim and anti-Arab complaints logged (the highest figure since CAIR began publishing data in 1996.) The group attributes this surge in part to the Trump administration's crackdown on pro-Palestinian protests and immigration enforcement, arguing that these policies collectively targeted Muslim and Arab communities. Most complaints fell into categories of employment discrimination, immigration and asylum issues, hate incidents, and travel discrimination. CAIR specifically highlighted the administration's targeting of Somali Americans in Minnesota and Afghan immigrants following isolated criminal incidents.

On the protest front, CAIR argued that the Trump administration's efforts to deport foreign protesters, freeze university funding, and screen immigrants' social media activity created a climate in which pro-Palestinian views were treated as inherently dangerous. Notable cases included the detention of Mahmoud Khalil and Leqaa Kordia. CAIR raised concerns about free speech, due process, and academic freedom, and the crackdown has faced several judicial challenges. Meanwhile, Republican governors in Florida and Texas designated CAIR itself as a "terrorist" organization, a move CAIR is challenging in court, with a Florida judge already blocking that state's order.
