Trump Cannot End Deportation Protections for South Sudanese Nationals, US Judge Rules

By Gonzalez Olivieri, on Immigration Updates

A federal judge in Boston has ruled that the Trump administration cannot terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudanese nationals. U.S. District Judge Patti Saris found that the Department of Homeland Security likely acted arbitrarily and provided pretextual reasons for ending South Sudan's TPS designation, which it had sought to do in November of 2025. The decision came after an immigrant rights group challenged the administration's move to strip protections that had allowed hundreds of South Sudanese to reside and work legally in the United States. This ruling represents a significant setback for Trump's broader immigration enforcement agenda. By blocking the termination of TPS for South Sudan, the court determined that the government failed to provide legitimate justification for its action, suggesting the decision was driven by political rather than legal or policy grounds.
