President Donald Trump is backing a legislative proposal known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act.” It packages broad immigration reforms with deep cuts to social programs. The bill includes around $150 billion over four years to fund a massive expansion of immigration enforcement. Specifically, the bill allocates $46.5 billion for extending and reinforcing 1,600 miles of border barriers, $45 billion to expand detention centers, and the hiring of 18,000 new immigration agents. Additionally, $1.25 billion will be allocated to grow the immigration court system in an effort to relieve the case backlog and allow for more efficient court hearings. The bill also proposes sharp fee increases for asylum and work permits which could deter low-income migrants from pursuing legal pathways.
Critics highlight a lack of clarity on how funds will be spent, raising transparency and accountability concerns. The supporters of this bill justify the approach as essential to national security, claiming that recent protests over immigration in L.A. are proof that the country needs stronger federal power.
