“Texas DPS Troopers Gain Federal Authority to Enforce Immigration Laws Under New Ice Agreements”

By Gonzalez Olivieri, on Immigration Updates

State Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety (“DPS”) are now authorized to enforce federal immigration laws under two agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”). The signed 287(g) partnerships allow DPS officers within the highway patrol to question, arrest, and process suspected undocumented immigrants under federal authority. The 287(g) program has been used by law enforcement agencies across the country since 1996. Such agreements allow state and local law enforcement to perform federal duties after receiving ICE training and oversight.

DPS officials claim the program will help streamline cooperation between state and federal agencies. Critics, however, warn that the agreements will likely lead to increased racial profiling and traffic stops targeting Latino drivers.
