A recent Pew Research survey reveals a that the American public opinion on the Trump administration’s immigration policies remain sharply divided. While 42% of Americans approve of his policies, 47% of Americans disapprove, the numbers are reflected upon the deep partisan split of 78% of Republicans supporting Trump’s approach, while 81% of Democrats oppose it. Additionally, there is harsh criticism on specific aspect of the policies like workplace raids, asylum applications and canceling Temporary Protected Status (TPS). About 54% of Americans disapprove of mass deportations relating to workplace raids and 60% oppose suspending asylum applications and canceling TPS for migrants from crisis-stricken countries.
Despite differing views on policies, some areas reveal a broader consensus. For example, a strong majority of Americans, about 65%, support offering legal status to undocumented immigrants, including 36% who favor a path to citizenship. Furthermore, economic concerns also play a role in the debate. Critics argue that mass deportations lead to labor shortages and higher costs, with 53% of respondents believing these policies place a greater financial burden on taxpayers. However, the support for the U.S./Mexico border wall has increased to 56% which shows increased alignment with one of Trump’s signature policy goals. When evaluating the issue of local police involvement in immigration enforcement, the public remains evenly divided.
