By Gonzalez Olivieri, on Immigration Updates
Republican mayors who gathered at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington criticized the Trump administration's aggressive immigration enforcement tactics following recent, fatal shootings by federal agents in Minnesota. Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt, Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer, and Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz expressed concerns that the crackdowns were chaotic, damaged community trust, and created fear among residents. The mayors called for the administration to deescalate, with Dyer emphasizing that federal agents should only operate with local government cooperation and proper training in deescalation tactics.
The criticism reflects growing fissures within the Republican Party over the administration's immigration agenda, even as the mayors broadly supported the overall goal. A POLITICO poll showed that more than one-third of Trump voters disapprove of how the immigration agenda is being implemented, despite supporting its aims. Holt warned that while border policies enjoy majority support, the interior enforcement approach "seems to be not working," and he urged fellow Republicans to speak out against the tactics rather than rubber-stamp administration actions.
