House Debates ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ Amid Fierce Opposition and Immigration Push

4

Republicans in the House advanced the procedural rule on President Trump’s sweeping tax-and-spending package, dubbed the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB), in a narrow 219–213 vote, setting the stage for a full right-to-debate vote. The 887-page bill seeks to make the 2017 tax cuts permanent, eliminate taxes on tips and overtime, expand child tax credits, and introduce “Trump accounts.” It also implements steep cuts to Medicaid (up to 18 %), reverses Biden-era clean energy incentives, increases funding for immigration enforcement (adding about $150 billion), and boosts defense spending. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects the legislation would increase the deficit by over $3 trillion by 2034 and leave nearly 12 million Americans uninsured.

House Democrats, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, delayed proceedings with a marathon filibuster, speaking for over six hours to pressure Republicans. They framed the bill as detrimental to low- and middle-income families, veterans, veterans, and small businesses, citing Medicaid reductions, SNAP restrictions, and higher debt burdens. The bill’s inclusion of aggressive immigration enforcement provisions, especially its funding for mass deportations, has inflamed partisan rifts. Despite internal GOP resistance from fiscal conservatives and moderates, leadership is pushing for action before July 4th, with Trump urging, “What are the Republicans waiting for?”
