Flood of ICE agents is coming to cities run by Democrats, White House warns

The Trump administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, announced plans to dramatically increase the presence of immigration agents in Democrat-led cities, targeting so-called “sanctuary cities” that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. This strategy follows a recent $170 billion funding boost for immigration enforcement, allowing the deployment of 10,000 new agents and the goal of deporting 1 million people annually. Homan warned that agents will conduct more street and worksite arrests, detaining not just individual suspects but also others present without legal status. The administration has criticized local officials who decline to hold detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arguing that their refusal forces riskier operations in public spaces.

The expansion includes $45 billion for detention beds, $46.6 billion for wall construction, and other Homeland Security funding, giving ICE a larger budget than several major federal law enforcement agencies combined. Critics, including immigrant-rights advocates, warn that the ramp-up in enforcement will increase civil rights violations and cause community unrest. A recent poll showed most Americans disapprove of the president’s immigration policies, and data reveals that the majority of those in ICE custody have never been convicted of a crime. Advocacy groups argue that instead of expanding detention and raids, the U.S. should invest in immigration system reforms that uphold due process and support long-term residents.
