DHS ends Temporary Protected Status for thousands from Nicaragua and Honduras

1

The Trump administration is ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for tens of thousands of migrants from Honduras and Nicaragua, stating that conditions in both countries have improved enough since Hurricane Mitch in 1998. TPS protects people from deportation and allows them to work legally in the U.S. While the Trump administration had previously revoked these protections, they were reinstated under the Biden administration. Now, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has determined that both countries have recovered sufficiently for individuals to return safely.

This announcement aligns with the administration’s broader efforts to restrict humanitarian protections for migrants from several countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti, and Venezuela. Some of these efforts have already faced legal opposition in federal courts. For TPS holders from Honduras and Nicaragua, protections will end in September 2025. DHS is urging voluntary departures and offering incentives such as complimentary plane tickets and $1,000 exit bonuses as part of its strategy to reduce the TPS population.
