Federal lawmakers have passed a sweeping $3-4 trillion budget and tax package that not only extends Trump-era tax cuts and slashes Medicaid, SNAP, and green incentives, but also dramatically expands immigration enforcement. The new law allocates approximately $150 billion over four years to border and interior enforcement, including $45 billion for new ICE detention facilities, $46.5 billion for border wall construction, funds to hire 10,000 ICE officers, and resources to detain up to 116,000 migrants daily. Additional measures impose new fees on asylum seekers and temporary visa holders and fund state and local cooperation through the controversial 287(g) program.
Advocates warn this marks an unprecedented federal commitment to mass deportation. The CBO estimates the bill will swell the deficit by over $3 trillion through 2034 and strip nearly 11 million Americans of health coverage. Critics argue it harnesses immigrant fees to pay for enforcement, further penalizing vulnerable populations. Community groups and analysts caution it could eclipse ICE’s current scale, citing already strained detention capacity and overburdened courts. As the House prepares to vote, Democrats decry the bill for “turbocharging mass deportations,” while Trump touts it as a cornerstone of national security and “law-and-order.” For more information on this and other immigration law developments, contact the attorneys at Gonzalez Olivieri LLC.
